Officials in Sacramento County are probing a shooting that took place on the evening of April 18 at Howe Park at the moment authorities were dissolving an unlawful assembly of several hundred people.
How It Started
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first dispatched to the park just after 6:30 PM on April 18 after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Shortly after, a second call came in about a reported physical confrontation taking place at the location.
Air support searched from above but reported no active disturbance. Nevertheless, it became clear that hundreds of people had congregated at Howe Park without any permit or approval.
When the Shots Rang Out
Deputies moved to clear the area by forming a perimeter and issuing commands over loudspeakers commanding those gathered to disperse at once. Around 15 minutes were given for the gathering to break up.
At the height of the dispersal effort that an estimated 20 to 25 shots were fired. The barrage of gunfire caused mass panic. Deputies immediately began looking for those injured.
Four Gunshot Victims
When the dust settled, four individuals were located with gunshot injuries. The shooting victims — made up of one woman and three men each apparently in their mid to late twenties — were brought to nearby hospitals. Emergency physicians indicated that two victims were in serious condition, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, all four were expected to survive.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District were called to the scene and provided medical assistance those who had been shot at the park.
Physical Evidence
Most of the gunfire seemed to have occurred adjacent to Cottage Way alongside the Home Depot store located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Detectives discovered more spent casings along Cottage Way. Round impacts were also found in the iron perimeter fence bordering the nearby Home Depot. This ballistic evidence pointed to that a shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from along Cottage Way toward the Home Depot store. The nearby Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown as a precaution. CSI units alongside detectives worked tirelessly through the early morning hours.
Suspects Detained

Sacramento law enforcement were en route to collect those detained to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Video reviewed at the scene established that there were two gunmen.
